3 Helpful Organization Solutions for Your Granny Flat

A Granny Flat is an old name for the popular again ADU. If you’re lucky enough to have an ADU on your property and are looking to rent it out or simply use it for guests, you’ll need to know how to properly maximize and organize the space.

Tip #1: Curate Kitchen Accessories for Ease

Let’s start with the kitchen. With space being limited, it’s important to pare down to the basics, making sure you only have one each of the most important items. Duplicates will only take up prime real estate.

Ditch the table and chairs and instead, install a makeshift mobile kitchen island that can serve as both an extra work space and a seating area. Choose small but powerful appliances. Look for multi-functional items with sleek designs.

Tip #2: Build Vertically to Maximize Usable Space

Make use of vertical space. Build shelving, drawers, etc. straight into the walls rather than buying individual pieces.

Floor space is precious and will need to be kept clear— floor to ceiling built-ins are a much better use of vertical space. Try to store essentials at eye level and anything seasonal or occasionally used at higher points in the built ins. Also, remember to check and see if you have space under the stairs that can be made use of for extra storage.

Tip #3: Select Pieces with Helpful, Hidden Storage

Space saving and hidden storage ideas:

1). Ottoman with extra storage
2). Coffee table with drawers
3). Bed with drawers
4). Daybed
5). Nesting Tables
6). Mount the TV into the wall
7). Murphy bed
8). Sliding Doors
9). An oval sink (takes up less counter space than a square one)
10). Built-ins
11). Slim appliances
12). Multi functioning appliances
